Growing up in the times of Hindi pop music and the likes and, I still found time to listen to Ravindra sangeet and Bengali folk songs. Later on I also developed a liking for country music while I was in Sir's tuition.
Recently I came across another genre of music that I knew existed but never bothered to experiment with. And now I am in love with operas!
Opera is a form of art which is a beautiful blend of music and drama and appeals to me immensely. I am an amateur when it comes to this particular genre of Western classical music. But the four operas I have had the opportunity to listen to, namely "The Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart, "La Traviata" by Giuseppe Verdi, "Carmen" by Georges Bizet and "Tosca" by Giacomo Puccini, have left an indelible impression in my mind.
"Carmen" is a French opera the story of which is set in Spain and revolves around Carmen, a gypsy girl with hot temper. "La Traviata" is again a French opera based on Alexandre Dumas' La Dame aux Camelias. "Tosca" finds its place in the list of the most popular operas of all time. It is based on Victorien Sardou's drama "La Tosca".
The Marriage of Figaro or the Day of Madness is a comic opera based on Pierre Beaumarchais' "La folle jourenee".
I consider myself fortunate to be born in a generation where search engines like Google gives you all the answers to your queries. I have never been to an opera but that did not stop me from pursuing my passion. I hope I will find readers who share a common interest towards operas and acquaint me with new ones.

Well brother I must say that you were the last person on my list from whom I expected to hear anything about the operas! But as usual you surprise me with the hidden passions and tastes that you have!
I will take this opportunity to say that I am a lucky one as I have seen an opera while I was in Sydney, Carmen by Bizet.Falsetto is not my type of music but the acting was awesome and moved me to tears.
Heavy metal, death metal and psyche rock are all well and good for some people, but operas can be enjoyed by old and young both. Our generation is unlucky that in the maze of development we have lost some finer arts to rock music (though I don't have anything personal against rock).
It's nice to see that college goers like you are appreciating operas besides running like crazy after Pink Floyd and Rasmus!
Thanks for such kind words Zenith. You are right when you say that the present youth has lost the different dimensions of music to a restricted genre of rock music. As you know I am a die hard fan of good rock music.Besides that I like listening to rabindra sangeet, baoul(bengali folk music).By the way I have news from certain genuine resources that you sing the song "nothing else matters " pretty well
Dear Partha,
The operas that you have mentioned here are good ones. May I suggest some more (though you might already know them)?
You can try (that is if you already haven't) - Orfeo et Euridice by Gluck, Don Giovanni by Mozart, Fidelio by Beethoven etc...
You can also try operas by Bellini, Rossini, Offenbach and my favourite, Richard Wagner.
The post was quite good and I'm aware you have written about only those ones that you have heard or seen. Do delve deeper and discover the charms of the operas!
I shall defintely listen to the operas that you have suggested.I am an amateur when it comes to the operas. Thanks for the suggestions.
A good life is essentially about constantly finding more wonderful things to enjoy, and the really poor are those who, despite income and leisure, have so few and such repetitive, no-brainer things to call enjoyment.
Happy exploring!
Sir
